Healing Journey Mural Installation
Mural artwork by Alise Eastgate
Project Management, Fabrication and Installation by Jack Eastgate
My partner, Alise Eastgate was awarded an amazing opportunity to create a mural installation in a new office building for a Bay Area corporate client. With my background in wayfinding and graphic design we found a way to work together on this project, mostly from home while raising our toddler and working other jobs. Alise designed the mural and I led project management, fabrication and installation. My role also involved procuring the materials during ongoing supply chain issues and wood shortages caused by the Covid-19 pandemic; so I had many opportunities to innovate and be resourceful. This was our biggest installation project to date, with many parts and methodologies applied at once. The project took about 9 months from concept to completion.
The mural is composed of over two dozen large plywood pieces that I handcut as well as plywood backers that function as spacers; the cutouts are installed on a painted and stenciled wall. The title is ‘Healing Journey’ and it occupies a corridor in a newly built space. The piece features animals who each embark on epic migration journeys through the Northern California Coast. They represent life from land, sea and sky, illustrating interdependence and unique abilities.
